Music Lessons

Jeremy Lyons has been teaching guitar for over 15 years. His teaching experience dates back to the street musician days of the early ‘90s. Interested tourists and locals would tap the young guitarist for pointers between sets. Jeremy himself studied slide and fingerstyle technique with renowned British guitarist Martin Simpson. His craft was honed, and his repertoire expanded while playing on the streets in New Orleans in the early to mid ‘90s. His elder associates in the Big Mess Blues Band were contributors to Jeremy's education (specifically Augie Rodola, Jr, Kenny Holladay, Lissa "Ragtime Annie" Driscoll, and Butch Trivette).

Jeremy teaches at all levels. For beginners he can provide a solid base in folk, blues and rock guitar, and as much theory as is appropriate. Jeremy’s specialties are fingerstyle (ala Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotten, Robert Johnson, etc) and slide (Fred McDowell, Muddy Waters, Blind Willie Johnson, and so on). He can teach his own arrangements, from simple to intricate (written in guitar tablature and accompanied by recorded examples) of various blues and folk styles. Jeremy focuses on finger/thumb isolation, slide technique and tone, picking patterns, chord-based verses scale-based improvisation, etc.

Basically, Jeremy’s philosophy is that students get better with practice, and they practice more if they have something fun to play.
